Like most of you I'm into clipping stuff I come across on the web. I also have a ton of notes that I want to keep organized. Earlier this summer I was using Pinterest for my pics and vid clips and Evernote for my web page and note clips. Then... +Robert Scoble introduced me to +Clipboard.
For those of you have never heard about Clipboard it is a platform that lets you clip aspects of webpages you come across. Last week they released the ability for us to add text clips i.e. notes to the boards you set up.
Clipboard is a perfect hybrid between Pinterest and Evernote and capitalizes on each of those platforms shortcomings.
Pinterest allows you to create a board on a certain topic and clip pictures or videos to those boards. Pinterest is obviously hugely successful for this but it lacks the ability to capture any text surrounding the picture or video. You can add your own text but you are limited by character count. You also can't use Pinterest to add text only clips or make your own text only notes.
Evernote allows us to create folders. In these folders you can clip a web page's content, a selection or create text only notes. Where Evernote is limited is that you can't explore Folders of Notes of other members. Also, HTML clips are displayed poorly.
Enter Clipboard. Clipboard allows you to set-up private or public boards. It allows you to clip a piece of a webpage or the entire thing. The best part for me is that if you clip a portion of a webpage it will display and work on your Clipboard as if you were on the original site. Movies and games will play, HTML will be kept in tact and work.
In addition, with the release of the text clips feature I am now also able to duplicate my work flow from Evernote which was to capture text based notes (often reminders) and organize them in my private boards. Finally, like Pinterest, Clipboard offers you the ability to search for People, Boards and clips letting you find great content and people to follow.
Here's how Gary William Flake (CEO of Clipboard) explains his offering:
_I am the CEO of Clipboard, so my answer is biased. But I think the two are only superficially similar and very different on a fundamental level. If I could tease out the single difference, it would be this:
Pinterest is about broadcasting your ideals.
Clipboard is about selfishly saving parts of the web for yourself.
This may sound like a small difference, but it's actually pretty profound. You see, if you are broadcasting as an act of self expression, you usually don't care if your output gets fragmented across multiple channels. This is why there are so many vertical clones of Pinterest (one for travel, porn, men, Lady Gaga, dogs, etc.). But if you are saving for yourself, you want your stuff in one place because to fragment it would hurt you.
More concretely, here are the other differences:
Pinterest saves just photos. Clipboards saves almost any type of web content (photos, videos, live flash applets, HTML, links, etc.).
Pinterest is public only. Clipboard defaults to private, can be made public, but has a group sharing capability as well.
Pinterest is visual only. Clipboard will tickle both sides of your brain because some content will be visual, some will be ontological, and other will be almost analytic (because we index the text of all clips).
Pinterest is about expressing a wish. Clipboard is about getting stuff done.
On this last point, you can post images of where you want to spend your vacation on Pinterest and it will almost always look better because of the restriction on keeping it visual. But on Clipboard, you can clip your flight reservations, hotel confirmation, driving directions, activities, contacts for friends you'll be visiting, shopping list, etc._
Trial
I did an experiment on a +Mashable post today. You can see by the 3 images attached to this post how Pinterest, Evernote and Clipboard handle clips from the same web page...Clipboard is the clear winner.
The HTML and the video work right inside the clip unlike the Evernote clip. I am also not limited to just clipping the video as with Pinterest. I can grab as much or as little of the text surrounding the video. This makes it far more valuable and to my community.
I am just getting going on Clipboard but can't wait to use it as my defacto web/note service with the hopes of introducing it to my clients as a great marketing vehicle.
Note - The iPhone app is pretty great as well and gives us the ability to clip from mobile safari web pages and apps.
